Drain Repair

Can a Drain Repair Quote Be Prepared From an Existing CCTV Survey?

The usefulness of an earlier drain survey depends on its coverage, location records and subsequent changes. Learn what helps establish a repair scope.

An existing CCTV survey can provide a useful basis for a drain repair quotation if it clearly identifies the affected pipe, shows the relevant defects and still represents its condition. Its age alone does not decide whether it can be reused. Missing footage, uncertain locations or changes since the inspection can be more significant than the date on the report.

Read the report alongside the footage

The written report summarises observations; the survey footage shows the context in which they were recorded. Supply both where available, together with the drainage plan and any photographs of access points. A still image of a crack may identify a problem but say little about the surrounding pipe, nearby branches or the length that was actually inspected.

Check that chamber references match across the documents. If the video starts at chamber three and the plan uses letters, include the key that connects them. Camera direction and recorded distances also matter. A drain defect location measured from one end should not be confused with the same distance measured from the opposite end.

Separate observed condition from uninspected pipe

A survey may finish because the camera reaches its destination, or because it cannot go further. Those are different outcomes. Look for notes about standing water, deposits, restricted access, changes in diameter and abandoned runs. An apparently short repair recommendation may relate only to the section the camera could see.

This distinction helps when reviewing drain repair options. The contractor needs enough evidence to assess the proposed treatment area and its access, rather than simply copying the last report’s recommendation. An existing CCTV report can be useful even when it does not answer every design question.

Explain what has changed since the inspection

Give the survey date and a short factual account of subsequent events. Relevant changes include further blockages, cleaning, excavation nearby, alterations to connected premises and previous repairs. If a drain has been cleared since the survey, the original footage may describe deposits that are no longer present while still providing useful information about its route.

A new symptom does not automatically mean that the original defect has worsened. It does mean the proposed repair should be checked against the current problem. For example, a report about a cracked section may not explain a later blockage in a different branch. Keep the location and timing of each incident separate.

Make the quotation’s evidence and scope clear

A useful proposal identifies the run, defect and treatment length, with any preparation, connection work and completion checks included. It should also state which information comes from the supplied survey and which matters still need confirmation. This distinguishes a developed repair scope from an initial estimate based on incomplete records.

The Environment Agency’s guidance for businesses recommends keeping a drainage plan and checking drains for leaks, blockages and misconnections. For a repair, connecting the condition evidence to that site record helps avoid treating the wrong section or overlooking an affected connection.

Where information is missing, identify the particular gap. That might be a short uninspected section, an inaccessible chamber or a location that cannot be matched to the plan. A targeted follow-up investigation can then be discussed. There is no reason to assume either that every old survey must be repeated or that every supplied report is sufficient for a final repair quotation.
